Puerto Rico's energy reality is unlike anywhere else in the United States. With an aging electrical grid, an average of over 100 power outages per year, and a hurricane season that runs from June through November, having a reliable backup energy source isn't a luxury — it's a necessity.

Propane-powered generator systems are the most reliable, cost-effective, and practical backup energy solution available on the island. Unlike gasoline, propane doesn't degrade over time. Unlike diesel, it burns cleaner and is easier to store safely. And unlike the electrical grid, your propane tank doesn't go down when a storm hits.

At Tropigas de Puerto Rico, we have been designing, installing, and fueling propane generator systems for over 60 years. With 23 distribution plants across the island and our own Maritime Terminal in Guaynabo, we guarantee continuous supply — even during the most severe emergencies.

Why Propane Is the Best Generator Fuel for Puerto Rico

    Propane vs. Gasoline

Gasoline degrades in as little as 30 days without a fuel stabilizer — making it unreliable for emergency storage. Propane, stored in a sealed tank, remains stable indefinitely.

    Propane vs. Diesel

Diesel fuel can absorb moisture and grow microbial contamination in tropical humidity, especially during prolonged storage between hurricane seasons. Propane is stored in a sealed pressurized container, completely isolated from humidity and contamination.

    Propane vs. Natural Gas

Puerto Rico has no natural gas pipeline infrastructure. Propane is the functional equivalent of natural gas on the island — and unlike natural gas lines, your propane tank keeps working even when underground infrastructure is damaged by earthquakes or flooding.

    3

    Permits

Depending on tank size and municipality, permits may be required. Tropigas guides you through the permit process.

    4

    Professional Installation

Our certified technicians install the complete system — tank, regulator, fuel lines, safety valves, and generator connection.

    5

    Leak Test & Certification

Before your first fill, we conduct a full pressurized leak test to certify the system is safe and properly sealed.

    6

    First Delivery & Activation

We fill your tank and activate your system. Your generator is ready for the next outage.

    Preguntas Frecuentes

In most cases, yes. Most generators designed for natural gas can run on propane with a conversion kit. Generators designed exclusively for gasoline require a more significant conversion. Our technicians evaluate your existing generator and determine the best path forward at no cost.

Per NFPA 58, a 120-gallon tank requires a minimum 10-foot clearance from any building opening. A 250-gallon tank requires 10 feet. A 500-gallon tank requires 10 feet from buildings and 10 feet from property lines. Our engineers identify the optimal placement during the site evaluation.

With 23 plants distributed across Puerto Rico — from Isabela to Yabucoa, from Arecibo to Ponce — we cover every municipality on the island. Find your nearest plant at tropigaspr.com/plantas.

For standard residential installations without permit requirements, the complete process from evaluation to first fill typically takes 5–10 business days. Commercial and industrial projects with permitting requirements vary based on project complexity.

Call 787-641-8002 immediately. Tropigas prioritizes emergency deliveries before major weather events. We strongly recommend filling your tank to maximum capacity at the beginning of hurricane season every June 1.
