Propane Tank Installation in Puerto Rico
Professional propane tank installation. Above-ground and underground tanks, all capacities, NFPA 58 certified.
Your propane tank is the foundation of your entire fuel system. Choose the wrong size and you'll run out of fuel at the worst moments. Place it incorrectly and you fail your NFPA 58 inspection. Install it without certification and you have an undocumented safety risk. Do it right, with Tropigas certified technicians following 60 years of Puerto Rico propane experience, and you have a fuel system that works reliably for decades.
Tropigas installs propane tanks of all sizes, above-ground and underground, for residential, commercial, and industrial clients across all 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico. Every installation is designed to NFPA 58 specifications, permitted where required, and certified with a pressurized leak test before first use.
Standard Tank Sizes and Applications

Propane Tank Types Available in Puerto Rico
Above-ground tanks:
The most common residential and commercial propane tank configuration in Puerto Rico. Above-ground tanks sit on a prepared concrete or gravel pad, are fully visible, and are easier to inspect and maintain than underground installations. Available in all standard sizes from 120 gallons to 1,000+ gallons.
Underground tanks:
Buried below grade with only the dome and fill valve visible above the surface. Underground tanks provide the same fuel capacity as above-ground tanks in a nearly invisible installation that preserves property aesthetics. Available in sizes from 250 gallons to 1,000+ gallons.
The Tropigas Tank Installation Process
Step 1 - Free site evaluation (Day 1):
A Tropigas engineer visits your property to assess your propane consumption requirements, evaluate available tank placement locations, determine whether above-ground or underground installation is more appropriate, recommend the right tank size, and identify any permit requirements for your municipality.
Step 2 - System design:
We prepare a complete installation design including tank placement diagram showing NFPA 58 clearances, gas line routing from tank to all appliances, regulator specification, and generator connection if applicable.
Step 3 - Permit application (if required):
Tank installation permits are required in most Puerto Rico municipalities for tanks above certain capacities. Tropigas submits permit applications and manages the process. Permit processing typically takes 1 to 4 weeks depending on municipality.
Step 4 - Site preparation:
For above-ground tanks: concrete pad or gravel base preparation, anchoring system installation. For underground tanks: excavation to appropriate depth, prepared base, inspection for soil conditions.
Step 5 - Tank delivery and placement:
Tropigas delivers your tank and positions it per the approved installation design. Underground tanks receive their protective coating and anode system before placement.
Step 6 - Connections and gas line installation:
Tropigas certified technicians install the regulator, service valve, gas line from tank to your home or business, and all connections to your appliances and generator. All gas piping is installed per NFPA 54 specifications.
Step 7 - Leak test and certification:
A complete pressurized leak test (prueba de hermeticidad) verifies that every connection is properly sealed. Official certification documentation is issued. This document is required for fire department inspections, building permits, and real estate transactions.
Step 8 - First delivery and activation:
Your tank is filled to 90% standard capacity (80-85% in summer). Your system is activated. Your propane service begins.
Hurricane-Specific Installation Considerations for Puerto Rico
Tank anchoring:
Above-ground propane tanks must be properly anchored to resist hurricane-force winds. Tropigas installs tanks with anchoring systems appropriate for Puerto Rico's wind exposure category. A tank that tips or shifts during a storm creates serious safety risk.
Flood elevation:
For properties in FEMA-designated flood zones, tank placement must account for base flood elevation requirements. Underground tanks in flood-prone areas require special installation considerations. Tropigas engineers are familiar with Puerto Rico's flood zone mapping and design installations accordingly.
Coastal corrosion protection:
Properties within several miles of the coast experience accelerated corrosion from salt air. Tropigas uses tank models and protective coatings appropriate for Puerto Rico's coastal environment and schedules more frequent inspection intervals for coastal installations.
Pre-storm fill capacity:
Tropigas recommends tank sizes that allow storage of sufficient propane for at least 7 to 10 days of generator operation, providing meaningful independence through the most common post-hurricane outage scenarios without requiring immediate post-storm delivery.
