Propane Tank Permits in Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, a residential installation needs no permit. The NTSP FG-Comercial permit applies only to commercial and industrial installations, after submitting plans. Tropigas guides you.

    Quick answer

In Puerto Rico, a residential propane tank installation does NOT require a permit: it follows the same NFPA rules as commercial ones, but there is no permit for that type. The permit applies only to commercial and industrial installations: it is issued by the NTSP and called FG-Comercial, after submitting plans and the required information. Tropigas guides you through it all. Call 787-641-8002.

Does a residential installation need a permit?

No. In Puerto Rico, a residential propane tank installation follows the same NFPA principles and regulations as a commercial one, but there is no permit for that installation type. That does not mean it is installed any way: it still meets NFPA 58 and 54, the safety clearances, and the correct location, only without a permit process.

The commercial and industrial permit: FG-Comercial

Commercial and industrial installations do require a permit. It is issued by the NTSP, the Negociado de Transporte y Otros Servicios Públicos, and is known as FG-Comercial. It is granted once the customer submits the plans or drawings of the installation and the other required information. It is the formal step confirming the commercial installation complies with the gas regulation before operating.

How the FG-Comercial permit is obtained

    1. Evaluation of the commercial or industrial property by an NFPA certified technician.
    2. Preparation of the installation plans or drawings and the required information.
    3. Submission to the NTSP for the FG-Comercial permit.
    4. Installation to NFPA 58 and 54, ready for inspection.
    5. Service activation once the permit and inspection are in order.

    Why the commercial permit matters

For a business or industry, operating without the FG-Comercial permit is a legal and practical risk: it can bring fines, affect insurance, and halt operations. Doing it in order from the start, with plans submitted and the installation meeting code, protects your business. See also propane tank regulations for the full framework.
