Who regulates propane tanks in Puerto Rico?

In Puerto Rico, propane is regulated by the NTSP (Negociado de Transporte y Otros Servicios Públicos), part of the Public Service Regulatory Board. The NTSP is the authority that adopts and enforces the gas regulation on the island, based on NFPA 58, the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, and NFPA 54, the National Fuel Gas Code that covers the piping and the connection to appliances.

    Tank clearances and location

NFPA 58 sets the minimum safety clearances from the tank to windows, doors, ignition sources, and property lines, and those clearances depend on the tank size. That is why the location is not improvised: an NFPA certified technician evaluates the property and places the tank where it meets code without taking your usable space. In coastal and high water table areas, corrosion and anchoring considerations are added.

    Permits and inspection

Depending on the type of installation and the municipality, a permit may be required, especially in multi-unit properties, in the commercial sector, or in areas with special requirements. The installation is inspected to confirm it complies with the NTSP regulation. Tropigas guides you through the documentation and makes sure the work passes inspection.

    Why a compliant installation matters

An out-of-code installation is a safety risk and also a practical problem: it can affect your insurance, complicate the sale of the property, and force you to redo the work. Installing correctly from the start, with certified personnel and to NTSP regulation, saves you all of that.
