Converting from electric to propane appliances is one of the most impactful energy decisions a Puerto Rico homeowner can make. Lower operating costs, faster performance, and independence from the AEE grid during outages deliver benefits that compound every month for years.
The Conversion Philosophy , Phased vs All-At-Once
- Phased conversion: Start with the water heater for maximum savings ($280 to $350 per year). Add the stove next for outage resilience. Add the dryer for additional savings ($60 to $103 per year). Add a generator for complete outage independence.
- All-at-once conversion: More cost-efficient because the propane infrastructure (tank, regulator, main gas line) is installed once and branches to all appliances.
Converting Your Water Heater to Propane
- What you need: A new propane water heater. A gas line from your propane tank to the water heater location. A shutoff valve and flexible connector.
- Cost: Propane water heater unit $400 to $900. Tropigas gas line installation $400 to $900. Total conversion cost $800 to $1,800.
- Annual savings: $280 to $350 per year vs AEE electric water heating.
- Payback period: 2.5 to 6 years.
- Timeline: 1 to 2 days from scheduling to completion.
Converting Your Stove or Range to Propane
⚠️ Important: When purchasing your propane range, confirm with the retailer that you need an LP (liquefied petroleum) gas model, not a natural gas model. Most ranges sold in Puerto Rico are already LP configured.
- Cost: Propane range $400 to $1,200. Tropigas gas line installation $300 to $700. Total $700 to $1,900.
- Timeline: 2 to 4 hours for the gas line connection.
- Primary benefit: Outage resilience. Your kitchen works during any AEE outage of any duration.
Converting Your Dryer to Propane
- What you need: A new propane dryer (LP models). A gas line from your supply to the laundry area. A shutoff valve and flexible connector.
- Cost: Propane dryer $600 to $1,000. Tropigas gas line installation $300 to $600. Total $900 to $1,600.
- Annual savings: $60 to $103 per year vs AEE electric drying.
- Timeline: 2 to 4 hours for the gas line connection.
Complete Home Conversion , The Efficient Approach
Converting water heater, stove, and dryer in a single project saves installation cost because the main gas line infrastructure is installed once.
| Component | Cost Range |
|---|---|
| Tank installation (250-gallon, if new) | $800 to $1,500 |
| Main gas line into home | $400 to $600 |
| Branch to water heater | $200 to $400 |
| Branch to kitchen | $200 to $400 |
| Branch to laundry | $200 to $400 |
| Three new appliances | $1,400 to $3,100 |
| Total project | $3,200 to $6,400 |
⚡ Key Fact: Annual savings from complete conversion: $400 to $500 per year in combined energy bill reduction. Payback period: 6 to 13 years for the complete system.

Your old electric appliances can be sold, donated, or recycled. Tropigas does not remove or handle your old electric appliances as part of the conversion. Your old 240-volt electrical outlets can remain in place. The electric water heater circuit can be switched off at the breaker panel.
Permits for Appliance Conversions
Individual appliance gas line connections may or may not require permits depending on your municipality. New propane tank installations more commonly require permits. Tropigas identifies all permit requirements during your site evaluation and manages the process.
