Tropigas de Puerto Rico is a propane distributor with more than 60 years of experience and 23 plants across the island's 78 municipalities that installs, maintains, and refills stationary tanks for commercial and industrial operations. Tank rental is designed for businesses that need bulk propane without owning the equipment.

NFPA 58, the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, governs the safe installation of propane tanks in Puerto Rico; together with NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code), it defines the clearances, protections, and leak tests that Tropigas meets on every rental.

    Who is tank rental for?

Tropigas tank rental is for commercial and industrial use only. We do not rent tanks to homes or for residential use. The service is built for businesses that consume bulk propane and prefer not to own the equipment, leaving installation, code compliance, and maintenance to Tropigas.

Examples of customers who qualify for rental:

    • Restaurants and commercial kitchens that rely on propane for ranges, ovens, and fryers.
    • Hotels and lodging with water heaters, dryers, and large-scale cooking.
    • Manufacturers and processors that use propane for boilers, drying, or process heat.
    • Industrial laundries and other high-volume hot water operations.
    • Institutions such as hospitals, schools, and centers that require continuous, reliable supply.

Important: Tropigas does not rent tanks for residences. For homes, we sell the tank and include a free installation design; see the For homes section below.

    Commercial and industrial tank sizes

For commercial rental we offer stationary ASME horizontal tanks, sized to the business's load. Usable capacity is shown at the standard 90% fill level used in Puerto Rico.

    • 250 gallon (horizontal): for small businesses with moderate consumption, such as a compact commercial kitchen. About 225 gallons usable at 90% fill.
    • 500 gallon (horizontal): for mid-size restaurants and hotels, or businesses with commercial boilers and water heaters. About 450 gallons usable at 90% fill.
    • 1,000+ gallon (horizontal, commercial and industrial only): for manufacturers, industrial processes, and high-consumption operations. Sized by the combined load of cooking, boilers, processes, and generators. Not for residential use.

How sizing by load works: a certified NFPA technician adds up the load of the commercial equipment (commercial cooking, boilers, processes, backup generators) and recommends the size that keeps the operation supplied between deliveries. For a full list of sizes, see our propane tank sizes guide for Puerto Rico.

    How does commercial rental work?

Under rental, Tropigas owns the tank and keeps it code-compliant. The business pays for the propane it consumes and the rental terms. Here is how it works:

    • Tropigas owns and maintains the tank: installation, safety inspections, and maintenance are handled by us throughout the rental.
    • Installation to NFPA 58 and 54: our NFPA certified technicians place the tank meeting the clearances, protections, and leak test required by code.
    • The business pays propane + terms: you pay for the fuel you consume and the rental agreement terms; the tank and its maintenance are included.
    • Free evaluation and clear quote: the commercial site evaluation is free and you receive a written quote during the visit. We do not publish fixed prices, because size and terms depend on your operation; the price gap is filled with a tailored quote.

For homes: buy the tank with free install design

If your need is residential, Tropigas does not rent the tank: we sell it and include a free installation design. A certified NFPA technician designs the safe placement of the tank for your home at no cost. If this is your situation, we invite you to buy a propane tank for your home with installation design included.
