Propane Tank Removal in Puerto Rico

Propane tank removal should be done by an NFPA certified technician, because the tank still holds residual propane that must be purged and handled safely before it is taken out. Tropigas disconnects it, makes it safe, and removes it, including underground tanks.

    Quick answer

Tropigas de Puerto Rico is a propane distributor with more than 60 years of history and 23 plants across the island that safely removes residential and commercial propane tanks. An empty tank is never fully empty: it holds propane vapor, which is why removal is a job for certified personnel, not a do-it-yourself task.

When is a propane tank removed?

It is removed when it will no longer be used or when it is in the way: switching fuels, replacing an old tank with a new one, decommissioning a system, selling or remodeling the property, or when there is an abandoned tank left by a previous owner. In any of these cases, the tank must be taken out safely and documented.

Why removal is done by certified personnel

A tank that looks empty still contains propane vapor, which is flammable. Removing it without purging or handling that residual is a real fire risk. Our NFPA certified technicians empty and purge the tank, disconnect it safely, and remove it to NFPA 58 code. Never try to move or cut a propane tank on your own.

    How the removal process works

    1. Free evaluation of the tank and access by an NFPA certified technician.
    2. Service shutoff, emptying, and safe purging of residual propane.
    3. Disconnection of the tank from the gas line.
    4. Tank removal; for an underground tank, excavation and extraction to code.
    5. Site cleanup and confirmation that the area is left safe.

Free evaluation, no commitment, NFPA certified technicians.

    Underground tank removal

An underground tank adds the excavation step. We locate the tank, empty and purge it, extract it, and restore the ground. As with underground installation, the work is planned to NFPA 58 and performed by certified personnel, never improvised.

    Are you replacing the tank?

If you are removing the tank because you are putting in a new one, we coordinate it in a single visit: removal of the old and installation of the new. For the home, the new tank is sold with a free installation design. See propane tank replacement for the detail.
